Experience the art and science of pruning with an immersive workshop at the Garden. Start your day with an in-depth look at the rationale for proper pruning techniques with Dr. Bob Schutzki. Then grab your shears and join Dr. Bob and Garden Executive Director, Matthew Ross in the gardens as you prune a variety of shrubs and small trees. Learn more about the benefits of dormant pruning in this intimate workshop co-sponsored by the MSU Extension Master Gardeners of Northwest Michigan.

**Please bring your own set of clean pruning shears to use for this workshop.**

About our Instructors

Dr. Bob Schutzki’s educational background in plants is vast. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture (Cook College, Rutgers University), a Master’s in Ornamental Horticulture (Rutgers University), and obtained his PhD in Forestry (Michigan State University). He recently retired from the Michigan State University Department of Horticulture after 38 years of service in teaching and extension. His teachings included landscape design, landscape restoration, native plants, plant identification, sustainability, and environmental design. Dr. Schutzki has worked with several in the nursery and landscape industry, as well as gardening and consumer groups, on outreach programming covering a variety of landscape design and horticultural topics.

Matthew Ross is the Executive Director of The Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park. Before coming to Traverse City, he worked as the Continuing Education Director at Longwood Gardens overseeing over 200 programs in horticulture, landscape design, and floristry. He is nationally recognized as leader in horticulture and gardening and has a BS and MS from Michigan State University in Horticulture Science with an emphasis in Landscape Design Construction Management and Urban Forestry respectively.
